--- title: Context-Aware BPM type: concept tags: [bpm, context-aware, contingency-theory, method-selection] sources: ["sources/2016-vombrocke-context-role-bpm", "sources/2021-vombrocke-context-aware-bpm-camas"] created: 2026-04-15 updated: 2026-04-15 --- # Context-Aware BPM The recognition that **no single BPM approach fits all situations**: the appropriate methods, governance, and tools depend on characteristics of the process, the organisation, and the environment. Rooted in **contingency theory** (Donaldson 2001) and Dey's (2001) general definition of context as "information that characterises an entity's situation" (sources/2021-vombrocke-context-aware-bpm-camas). ## Why it matters A BPM intervention designed for a high-volume, repetitive, low-knowledge process in a large bank fails when applied to a creative, low-volume, high-interdependence process in a start-up — and vice versa. Context-awareness reframes BPM choices as **conditional** on the situation rather than universal best practice. ## Three layers of context-aware BPM literature 1. **Context factors** — what dimensions matter. vom Brocke, Zelt & Schmiedel (2016) proposed four dimensions (goal, process, organization, environment), treating context as BOTH **internal** (BPM goals, process characteristics) AND **external** (organization, environment) — a departure from earlier BPM literature that only considered external/environmental factors. See frameworks/bpm-context-framework. 2. **Context-aware process design** — how to design a process given a context. 3. **Method assessment & selection** — how to pick a method for a given context. Until CAMAS (2021) this layer was under-developed. ## Cross-references with other concepts - concepts/bpm-lifecycle — context-awareness applies at every lifecycle stage. - concepts/bpm-maturity — orthogonal: maturity is *how well* an org does BPM; context-awareness is *which BPM*. - methods/process-discovery-methods — discovery method choice (interview vs. workshop vs. evidence) is itself a context-dependent decision. ## Dynamic view Contexts change over time — resources, competitiveness, and culture are not static. vom Brocke et al. (2016) argue BPM therefore requires **continuous context monitoring and adaptation**, not a one-off classification at project start. ## Open questions - Empirical evidence shows the BPM method literature is biased toward **exploitative** (incremental) BPM; **explorative** (innovation/transformation) BPM is under-served (sources/2021-vombrocke-context-aware-bpm-camas). - Factor **interdependencies** (e.g., size → resources; industry → process characteristics) are acknowledged but unmodelled (sources/2016-vombrocke-context-role-bpm). - How does context-awareness interact with agentic BPM (concepts/agentic-bpm)? Open.
